Alternative de-icing agents
For places where an ice-free passage is important but you would prefer not to spread salt, Eurosalt offers a couple of alternative de-icing agents:
Calcium chloride prills
Calcium chloride produces heat when it comes into contact with ice and water. This can, for example, be used to melt a thick layer of ice that has already been formed.
Urea
Urea is used on surfaces where Chlorides are not welcome, for example on steel bridges. It is also used by people who do not wish to have salt trodden inside their homes.
Potassium Acetate
Potassium Acetate is used on surfaces where no corrosive materials may be used, for example on airports and steel bridges.
